Update on Events

As you may be aware, we have been having a few problems with our website, particularly with the events section.  There have been several instances when we have not been able to ‘upload’ speaker’s presentations.  This was due to our website hosts going into administration.

Thank goodness for SBEN member, Lawrence Davis based in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, who came to the rescue!  They are now our new website hosts and we are delighted with the service that we received from them.  Needless to say, the issue with the presentations has now been resolved.

Improving Your Resource Efficiency

In partnership with Business Link West Midlands

As mentioned in the last newsletter, SBEN has been awarded £60,000 of funding from Business Link West Midlands, to run a 2 year programme of FREE events on resource efficiency.

The purpose of this programme is to provide free expert advice to help SME’s across the region make smarter use of energy, water or materials, identifying ways to cut out waste and drive down costs, saving money!  Cut the costs of your business and see your profits grow!

The first breakfast seminar was held on 25th March, at Keele University.  For those who were not able to attend on this date, the seminar was held again on 11th May at Rodbaston College, Penkridge.

Feedback from the 1st event:

"Inspirational!" was just one of the comments made about our main speaker, Mark Shayler from Eco3, who scored a very impressive 97% for “Quality of Speaker”.  Mark is aiming for even higher next time!

Presentations were also given by:

  • Lucy Challinor from Keele University, on Project Green.
Accessing graduate placements to help with your environmental projects, such as resource efficiency
  • Tim Robins from Envirowise
    The help available to businesses.

Feedback from the 2nd event:

Yet another excellent event, with an Overall Satisfaction score of 91%.

Presentations were given by:

Mark Shayler from Eco3, who once again scored 97% for his presentation.

In addition, case studies were presented by:

  • Manel Roura (Environmental Officer) DENSO Manufacturing U.K. Ltd
    How the company achieved:
    Zero Landfill in 2 years
Significant savings by implementing Resource Efficiency.
Benefited from the support of several Environmental Programmes (Envirowise, NISP, Green Project)
  • Stuart Oakey (EHS Manager, Heinz Midlands Factories)
"Environmental Improvement Through Engagement" and the importance of involving staff at all levels.

The 3rd free resource efficiency event will be held on 6th July.  This will involve delegates undertaking a water audit.  Our thanks to SBEN member, Finning UK Ltd, and in particular Judith Smith, for volunteering to host this visit.  Judith is a member of SBEN’s Organisers Group and Management Team and is always keen to help!

The aim of this event is to help businesses understand where they are using water, identify opportunities to make savings and to review water saving devices and good practices.  These concepts can then be applied to delegates’ businesses to take into account their site-specific circumstances and generate an action plan to reduce their water usage and improve their environmental performance.

Colin Bryan (C. W. Bryan Environmental Ltd) will be presenting on:

“Maximising Water Efficiency in your Business”
Understand your Water Bills and where water is being used
How to carry out a Site Water Balance and establish areas of water usage
Identify opportunities on site for reducing consumption
Review water saving devices and good practice
Site details, available data and site audit

Bill Thomas (ISHEM Consulting) will also give a presentation on “Legionella - Risks and Control Strategy”.

The 4th free event is to be held on 12th October, at The Moat House, Acton Trussell, Stafford.  Once again, Mark Shayler will be presenting, along with representatives from local companies on successful outcomes and savings made.

There’s only one thing left to say…….get involved, cut costs and save money!

Past Events

28th April:  Manchester United  Football Club - Energy & Carbon Management
What a fantastic enviro visit!

Our thanks to SBEN member, Keith Maloney from Economic Energy, who organised the event.  Economic Energy are energy management and renewable technology consultants, who have earned a reputation for driving down costs and reducing energy and carbon emissions for many well known companies.

Recently, they have developed and facilitated an energy saving programme within Manchester United Football Club. The programme has resulted in a saving of over 18% on energy use.  Over a 7 month period, the club has saved £237,000 for an outlay of just £28,000!!

They are also the first football club to receive the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard Accreditation.

The day started off with three fascinating presentations, which were very aptly named, followed by a tour of the grounds:

  • Reds Go Green
(Keith McIntosh, Health, Safety & Environmental Manager)
  • “United to Save Energy” Our Carbon Reduction Challenge
(Keith Maloney, Director, Economic Energy Limited)
  • Lighting & Engineering Initiatives
     (Mark Gyves, Electrical Manager)

It was very refreshing to listen and talk to people who are so positive about what can be achieved.  As mentioned by Keith there was certainly a ‘can do’ attitude, which was apparent from the various presentations.  We were shown great hospitality as soon as we arrived, from the Security men to the cleaners – everyone was so approachable and friendly.  It just shows how much everyone enjoys working for such a great ‘company’.

As expected, the delegate’s comments were excellent:

"Excellent presentations - everyone's enthusiasm shone through!"
"Extremely useful example as immediately identifiable by all businesses.  Very accommodating - extremely well organised"
"Amazing visit - shows what savings can be made without too much effort and cost"
"This was a fantastic visit - would love to visit again soon!"
"Superb!"
"Great visit thanks.  Learnt a great deal that I can pass onto small businesses"
"Very well organised visit, with very good content.  Extremely professional!"
"Absolutely fascinating!"
"Genuinely interesting and will be a useful reference point.  Everything ran like clockwork - really well organised"

25th May: Enviro Visit to HMP Dovegate
One of the delegate’s comments summed up this event perfectly:

"Excellent - particularly to see how an establishment is working under restrictions.  Captivating!"

Our thanks to the team at HMP Dovegate for organising and hosting this fascinating visit.  The work that is being undertaken, not only with the prisoners, but also on the recycling to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, is inspirational!

Other comments included:

"Excellent Dovegate staff interaction"
"Wow!  What a fantastic visit.  How do SBEN do it?  I learned so much and great to see the efforts being made by staff"
"Excellent insight into prisoner rehabilitation"
"Excellent, enjoyable, informative visit"

HMP Dovegate is a male category B training prison housing approximately 1000 prisoners on the main site with an attached 200 bed Therapeutic Prison.  Prisoners must have been sentenced to at least 4 years and have 18 months of that sentence to serve.

Originally built in 2000, opening in July 2001 to house 850 total prisoners, the prison was extended last year with a new houseblock and education college being built and extensions to kitchens, multifaith centre etc. to support the increase in population to 1200 across the sites.

Great importance is placed on training and giving prisoners skills for life.  Education covers the full range of subjects with special emphasis on basic numeracy and literacy skills. Vocational training includes plumbing, painting and decorating, electrics and industrial cleaning.

HMP Dovegate is proud to have been awarded the British Safety Council 5 Star award and has this year been accredited to OHSAS18001.  Plans are to be accredited to BS EN ISO 14001:2004 later this year.

10th June: Measuring, Reporting & Benchmarking Environmental Performance
"Very thorough & informative presentations" was just one of the comments about this very successful breakfast seminar.   Paul Burr, from WYG, gave a presentation covering, advanced environmental management topics such as supply chain management, monitoring and measurement of environmental performance and public reporting.

Tim Robins (on behalf of WRAP - Waste Resource Action Programme), also gave a presentation including "How do I measure environmental performance".  A 'how to' guide (GG707R) can be downloaded from the Envirowise website:
www.envirowise.gov.uk

WRAP have a confidential Advice Line (0808 100 2040) covering many topics.

Other comments from delegates:

"Illuminating / useful"
"Overall, exceedingly good"
"Another very good event - well done"

22nd June: How to Deal with an Environmental Emergency
What fantastic feedback from the delegates!!

94% Quality of Speaker
96% Seminar Content & Relevance

Comments included:

"I found the seminar very useful.  The information was relevant and the mock spillage incident helped me to visualise the entire procedure".
"Very informative exercise".

This was the 2nd year running that Nadiya Seeloch from Groundwork West Midlands has presented on this topic.  After an early start for everyone, Nadiya and her colleagues Dipvandana and Sukhvinder, still managed to get everyone motivated to join in the mock spillage exercise!!
