Stoke-on-Trent City Council (Waste Collections) Paddy Knowles (Waste Services Manager)

Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Waste strategy identifies ‘waste’ as a resource which should be disposed of in the most environmentally sustainable manner at an affordable price.

The Council has a responsibility to collect waste from householders (residential waste) and when requested to do so from commercial and industrial businesses (trade waste) when collected the waste is termed ‘municipal’ as it has been collected by the Council and as a Waste Disposal Authority the Council has obligations to central government for the amount of municipal waste which is sent to landfill (EU landfill Directive).

The Stoke on Trent City Council Trade waste collection team currently has approximately 1400 trade waste customers, the team are extremely business focused and understand that one size definitely doesn’t fit all, there remit is to ensure that the customer has the right size ‘bin’ to deposit their waste at the cheapest possible price.  To support this we make available a wide variety of collection containers from sacks to 1100 wheeled Euro bins.

What we do with your waste

The Council recognised in the early 90’s that the increasing reliance on landfill was not a sustainable option and entered into a 25 year contract with neighbouring authority Staffordshire County Council with Hanford Waste Services Limited to convert the existing incinerator at Campbell Road, Hanford into a Energy from Waste plant.

All trade waste currently collected by the Council is sent to the Energy from Waste plant and is used to generate electricity.  The plant produces approximately 90,000 kilowatts of electricity from 163,000 tonnes of ‘resource’. The electricity produced is fed into the local grid and used to supply one in five homes in the city.

As part of the Council’s commitment to finding the most sustainable disposal for the resources produced in the area, the trade team is investigating opportunities to introduce and develop a commercial recycling service to meet our businesses increasing awareness of the green agenda.
