PEM + Training
Practical Environmental Management Training

Practical Environmental Management + (PEM+) is specifically designed for the Small to Medium Sized Enterprise to help you to understand and manage the environmental impact of your business through:

• Increased knowledge of regulations and legal compliance
• Identifying cost savings and gaining a competitive advantage through increased efficiency
• Improved relationships with customers, regulators and the public
• Continual improvement
• Increased environmental awareness

PEM+ is a new training course, supported by Barclays. PEM+ adopts the BS 8555 phased approach to introducing environmental management into a company. The training enables the delegate to develop, implement and maintain an environmental management system (EMS) that meets your company needs. There are six phases to BS 8555, each of which can be individually verified by a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited verification body, leading finally to either ISO 14001 or EMAS certification.

course format
There are five main elements to the course, made relevant by local speakers with “sharp end” experience, combining project work, workshops and classroom sessions. Progress on the course is monitored by portfolio assessments and a 1 hour examination.

elements are covered in five sessions:
1. Commitment and establishing the baseline
2. Identifying and ensuring compliance with legal, customer and market requirements
3. Developing objectives, targets and programmes
4. Implementation and operation of the EMS
5. Checking, audit and review

Successful candidates will be awarded a training award from The Chartered Institution of Water and
Environmental Management (CIWEM) and will have produced a set of documentation that will support a company through to implementation of Phase 3 of BS 8555.
