Walking
Walking is a mode of transport that is non-polluting, consumes negligible natural
resources yet is highly efficient. Regular walking is important in the prevention
and management of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, and in the retention
of function in late middle age and beyond.
Walking with a partner or a group allows people to socialise and can improve personal safety.
Cycling
For many short journeys cycling can be the quickest way to travel. Travel costs
are low and traffic jams can often be avoided. Cycling is efficient, healthy and
does not harm the environment.
Public
transport
Public transport has the potential to move large numbers of
people efficiently to and from work. A typical bus can seat up to 50 drivers!
Better passenger information and improved services are helping to make the bus a convenient and attractive choice.
The general issues of prices, reliability, regularity and security are being addressed on a countywide basis, in partnership with public transport operators as part of the Staffordshire Local Transport Plan. Bus priority measures and bus-lanes are speeding up journeys.
The Green Travel Organiser can negotiate with public transport operators on your behalf for better, more convenient services for your site, plus tempting staff discounts.
Need
to travel
With the developments in information technology and communications,
working from home has become a viable option for some jobs. The concept is that
you travel to work 'down the telephone wire' rather than along the road network.
Like all other alternatives it does not necessarily apply to every working day
nor is it applicable to all employees. It does however have a number of advantages
where it can be used.
Work-related
travel
There is a need to travel to sites, local offices and meetings
as part of normal work for many staff. Such journeys are usually made by car,
and paid for by the company.

How much longer will it take before the amount of time we spend stuck in traffic jams becomes unacceptable too expensive, too time consuming?
Let me know of any initiatives you are involved in too. We always like to recognise examples of good practice
