Our thanks to the team at HMP Dovegate for organising and hosting this fascinating visit. The work that is being undertaken, not only with the prisoners, but also on the recycling to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, is inspirational!
One of the delegates comments summed it up perfectly:
"Excellent - particularly to see how an establishment is working under restrictions. Captivating!"
Other comments included:

HMP Dovegate is a male category B training prison housing approximately 1000 prisoners on the main site with an attached 200 bed Therapeutic Prison. Prisoners must have been sentenced to at least 4 years and have 18 months of that sentence to serve.
Originally built in 2000, opening in July 2001 to house 850 total prisoners, the prison was extended last year with a new houseblock and education college being built and extensions to kitchens, multifaith centre etc. to support the increase in population to 1200 across the sites.
Great importance is placed on training and giving prisoners skills for life. Education covers the full range of subjects with special emphasis on basic numeracy and literacy skills. Vocational training includes plumbing, painting and decorating, electrics and industrial cleaning.
HMP Dovegate is proud to have been awarded the British Safety Council 5 Star award and has this year been accredited to OHSAS18001. Plans are to be accredited to BS EN ISO 14001:2004 later this year.
